Summary of Meeting Minutes from February 2003

The meeting began with an introduction and welcome to our group's newest family. Welcome to the Doss family-Lisa, Joshua, and Elizabeth!

The treasurer's report is in the positive. The group discussed our various fund-raisers; funds have also been generously given through donations. The group then discussed the uses of group funds thus far; the group now owns a microscope, excellent quality curriculums, and a useful library full of unique homeschooling resources. In addition group funding has enabled members to have group functions and refreshment supplies.

Julie Tatum again mentioned upcoming plays at the War Memorial Auditorium in Greensboro, NC. On February 25th at 11:45am the play Freedom Train will be performed. The price is $5 per seat; ages 2 and up. If you plan to attend you must have your money to Julie no later than February 10th, or you will be unable to attend. On March 25th,The Diary of Anne Frank will be performed. The price is $6.00 per seat; ages 2 and up. If you plan to attend you must have your money to Julie no later than March 3rd, or you will be unable to attend.

This month's homeschool skate still stands as Feb. 17 from 1-3 at the Eden Roll-A-Bout. Michelle Vantrease has been unsuccessful in contacting the management of the skating rink to make certain that this date still holds, as it is President's Day. She will contact everyone within the group ASAP if there are any changes to the schedule.

Debbie Raner informed the group that this year's Science Fair has been cancelled due to lack of participation. She apologized for the inconvenience and disappointment to the children who worked so hard on a project. The idea was bandied about to set another date for the group this year, no date was decided upon. If this idea appeals to you please contact Debbie Raner.

Michelle Vantrease read aloud and passed out the Recreation Center Rules and Penalties. All members of the group who plan to take part in Recreation Center homeschool activities are required to read over the rules with their family, and then sign them as an agreement to abide by these rules. In order to promote a safer and saner meeting place the rules have become necessary. For a copy of the rules please contact Michelle Vantrease @ 548-3171.

The WRHE Library Agreement was read aloud and passed out. The library is still in the process of being completed. A list of available books, materials and resources will be available before the end of the month. Contact Michelle Vantrease for more information regarding use of the library.

There will be a Drama meeting on Feb. 7th at the Mt. Bethel Christian Church in the fellowship hall from 1-3. This meeting will be intended to lay out expectations and rehearsal and productions dates for the WRHE Drama Troupe production of The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Auditions will be held on Feb. 14th.

Dates for coming events were discussed and are as follows: The International Cultural Awareness day will be held on March 10th from 1-4 pm. Participation is for student members of WRHE; all ages may participate. In this event individuals, or family teams, choose a culture or country to study and present to the group. Projects may include some or all of the following: posters, short skits, cultural dress and presentation of customs, food preparation, and written reports. This event is an outstanding opportunity to participate in public speaking; last year's event was a resounding success!

The Arts and Literature Fair will be held in April. The tentative date is scheduled for Monday the 21st from 6:30-8:30pm. In this even individuals may enter the fair in three different categories: book report, original work of literature, and original artwork. The categories are then divided into grades: K-2, 3-5, and 6 and up. There is a one-dollar entry fee for WRHE members and a five-dollar entry fee for non-members. Grand prizes and awards are issued for each grade level. Light refreshments will be served. This is an excellent opportunity for your child to display and be recognized for his achievements. This was an extreme success last year, and is anticipated to be more successful this year.

March 17-21 is NC Homeschool Week. WRHE plans to put together a display in the local branch of Rcokingham Public Library. The purpose of the display is to inform the public of their choice in schooling alternatives, and to inform the county of the existence of our group. A display was placed in the Mayodan Library last year and was a success. Some members of the group are planning to visit Raleigh on March 18 in observance of the week. Information for this trip can be found on the NCHE Website.

Kristine Parker introduced a new plan to hopefully help those within the group who are finding all of the activities and clubs too frantic. Many want to participate in all clubs but find them too numerous to enjoy them all. She suggested a "workshop schedule" to hopefully prevent the overlapping of clubs, and to help facilitate the completion of great clubs. More information will be supplied to the group as the idea develops and materializes. If you have any ideas to add to this plan, or any "workshops" that you would like to give or participate in, please contact Kristine Parker or Tonya Totin.

Tonya Totin informed the group of her plans to organize willing teens to put together a Resource Packet for all members of WRHE. The packet is to contain brochures and information on all surrounding parks, museums, bookstores, and any resource that could be useful to the homeschooling family. These resources are already available on the WRHE website but for those who care to have physical information in their hands as opposed to virtual, this could be a useful resource. If your teen would like to participate please have them contact Tonya Totin.

Debbie Raner informed the group of tentative plans for a field trip to Jamestown's McCollugh Gold Mine in March. The tentative date is set for the 26th, but right now she is more interested in seeing if there is strong interest in this trip. If you have an interest please contact Debbie to let her know so that she can plan accordingly. There are also tentative plans of coupling this trip with an AM trip to Fox 8 studios on the same day.

Julie Tatum, adult 4-H leader, informed the group of the coming meeting on Feb. 24th. This meeting will be the officer inductee ceremony. Peggy Lewis will also be in attendance to speak with 4-H'ers briefly and to present a project.

Respectfully submitted by Michelle Vantrease
