Minutes of WRHE Business Meeting
The regularly scheduled meeting of the Western Rockingham Home Educators was held April 7, 2003 at the Madison Mayodan Recreation Center. The meeting was called to order at 1:00pm by Tonya Totin, president.
The first order of business was the treasurer’s report, given by Julia Tatum who reported the bills paid and money received from skates and membership dues gave a balance of $62.06.
Next was the report about the upcoming field trip which is the trip to Castle McCulloch. It is a 3 hour tour April 24. Cost is $7.00 per child and $2.00 per adult. Debra Raner is in charge of the trip, contact her for details.
Michelle Vantrease gave the Drama Troupe report. She announced the play would be given May 30,2003.
The Arts and Literature Fair will be held April 28 at Mount Bethel Church. Pre-register by April 25. The level are K-2, 3-5, and 6 and up and the categories are Original Art, Original Literature (creative work) and Book Reports. There will be awards for each level and category and participation recognition.
The Book Fair is tentatively scheduled for May 12 at the Rec. Center. From 1:00-3:00 tables will rent for $5.00 non-member and $2.00 for a member. Vendors will be charged $10.00 per table. There will be a freeby table where members will contribute items they wish to share. Children who prepared Science Exhibits are invited to display them at this time, although they will not be judged, they will be appreciated!
4H will be meeting at a new time on the fourth Monday of each month from 2:00-3:00. Membership dues are now due, $5.00/child/year.
Teacher Discounts: Tonya announced that educator discounts are available at the Hobby Lobby on Eastchester Drive in High Point, as well as Borders, Barnes and Nobles, JoAnn Fabrics, and Benjamin Franklin Crafts. Simply take your school registration card with you and apply for the teacher’s discount. Discounts range from 10% to 25%.
We need a committee to plan the Field Day activities at Ferris Park. If you are willing to help with the planning please see Tonya Totin.
The Annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held next Monday April 14 at the Rec. Center. Participants are requested to bring a dozen plastic eggs and a basket to enjoy the fun.
The Biology Class has ended and was generally agreed to have been a very positive educational experience. Plans are underway to organize a Chemistry class for the fall semester. A discussion ensued about changing the order of the high school sciences instead of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, perhaps we should consider Physics, Chemistry, Biology. The advanced math needed for Physics was a concern of some, whereas the additional experiences made Biology a good fit for the last spot.
Finding an honor society for our students has been an on-going project. Michelle Vantrease reported about the new ESA society especially for homeschoolers. WRHE could sponsor their own chapter.
Tonya reminded everyone about their Boxtops for Education project for an easy fundraiser. We have already raised $35.00, and everyone is reminded to bring their Boxtops in to the monthly meetings.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned at 2:15 pm.
Respectively submitted,
Trish Gilbert
