Minutes of WRHE Business Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Western Rockingham Home Educators was called to order at 1:00pm May 5 by Tonya Totin, President.

In lieu of an official treasurer’s report, Tonya reported we did make $5.00 on the skate, which she spent on the new flyers. Boxtops for Education have notified us we will be getting a check for $35.00. Tonya emphasized the importance of the Boxtops and asked members to please save Campbell’s Soup Labels also. Trish Gilbert will serve as our Labels for Education Coordinator, so please turn n Labels to her at any meeting.

Tonya distributed copies of the Mission Statement to new members to ensure that there was no further misunderstanding concerning it.

Since our last skate was the last skate until September, the group discussed having a monthly swim party in its place. Trish will work with Mahara in planning this.

Concerning field trips, a new form will be added to the website, Field Trip Planner, for our convenience in organizing trips.

The next 4-H meeting will be held at 6:00 at the Extension Office in Wentworth. It is a covered dish supper and the program will be about Meteorology.

Scholastic Good Fairs have their warehouse sale for teachers only May 13-20 with 50% or more off.

Asta will plan the hiking/swimming field trip for early June at Hanging Rock State Park. Mahara is organizing a rock climbing fieldtrip for the summer and a skiing trip next winter. Ginger offered a tour of her family’s organic vegetable farm and dairy including a demonstration of milking and cheese making.

The Drama Troupe will begin in the fall with several one-act plays appropriate to travel to competitions and presentations in nursing homes, daycares, etc.

Educational Resources were the next topic of discussion. On-line sites recommended were http://www.bygosh.com/ , http://www.bookadventure.org, http://edhelper.com/ , http://gutenberg.net . The Greensboro History Museum has wonderful programs also.
